ATEX centrifugal pumps: quality and safety in industrial sectors

ATEX-Kreiselpumpen

ATEX centrifugal pumps are one of the prides of CDR production. Our company is particularly committed to workplace safety, with the protection of workers as a top priority. That is why most of our range of pumps, magnetic drive or not, are designed to operate safely in environments with potentially explosive atmospheres.

Generally, the entire range of our products is perfectly suited to processing in the industrial, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. Whether for technical needs, specifications or working methods, some pumps are obviously preferred over others. In this article we want to talk about the products that are most popular with our customers.

ATEX centrifugal pumps: a quick recap

When we talk about ATEX, we are referring to potentially explosive atmospheres (the name stands for ATmosphères EXplosibles, French for “explosive atmospheres”). ATEX centrifugal pumps are designed according to specific specifications that reflect two occupational health and safety directives issued by the European Union. These are ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU (or ATEX 114) and ATEX Directive 1999/92/EC (or ATEX 153).

Potentially explosive atmospheres refer to a combination of extremely flammable substances (both in the form of gases and powders) and oxidising agents, such as air. In specific concentrations and in the presence of an external trigger (such as a spark or an overheated surface), these mixtures can cause fire and explosive reactions (for further information, please refer to this article)

ATEX certification means that the pump manufacturer (in this case CDR, but there are many and varied ATEX certified products) has done everything necessary and has taken all appropriate measures to ensure maximum possible safety in this type of environment.

magnetic drive pumps: customer favourites

In environments classified as ATEX, we have noticed an increasing number of requests for magnetic drive pumps in recent years. This trend is due to the fact that, compared to traditional pumps equipped with a mechanical seal, magnetic drive pumps offer significant advantages. Not only are they more efficient in terms of performance and yields, but they also present a considerably higher level of safety. Thanks to their innovative design, these pumps completely prevent the leakage of any type of liquid, thus reducing the risk of accidents and improving the protection of the working environment.

Thanks to the innovative magnetic drive technology, rotary motion is transferred without any mechanical contact, using only the attractive force generated by the magnetic fields. As there are no joints or mechanical seals involved, perfect containment of the liquid is achieved, minimising the risk of any leakage. This system not only guarantees safety for the operator, but is also very environmentally friendly.

2024 was an important year, ending with great results and satisfaction. 2025 also promises to bring new developments and challenges and great opportunities for both us and our customers. With these great results achieved, and all our future goals firmly ahead of us, we would like to take a quick look at the ATEX centrifugal pumps that have proven to be most in demand for each of our main production sectors.

The chemical sector

In terms of the chemical sector, which is particularly delicate due to potential contamination, we have the UTS pump in the steel version and the UTN/DTN ISO lined version (PP, ETFE or PFA). Both the UTS and the UTN series are designed with a closed impeller to handle clean fluids with no solids.

These process pumps are particularly suitable for 24-hour use. In addition, given the very high demand from a large number of customers, they are available in various sizes to cover the specific needs of each sector and clientele. At a technical level, they can reach over 300m3/h and 100m head.

The pharmaceutical sector

In addition to the two already mentioned, which are perfect for any environment, we would also like to highlight the XTS and XTN series. These are ATEX centrifugal pumps built specifically for the pharmaceutical sector. These devices were introduced in 2018 driven by a company we collaborate with, which needed to handle fluids containing solids, powders and residues. Our magnetic drive pumps were therefore ideal for this task.

The advanced hydraulic technology of this series of pumps took years of work and development to perfect, but the results are truly significant. To date, the XTS and XTN series are the pride of our Technical and R&D Department, and have been recognised and appreciated by our customers around the world.

X series, specifically, is a magnetic drive pump with open impeller, fluted shaft and diamond bushings capable of pumping liquids containing solids, guaranteeing excellent performance and unprecedented safety.

The industrial sector

The ETN and ETS series of pumps are the most widely used in the industrial sector. However, it is worth remembering that this field covers many different areas, ranging from water treatment to the paper and galvanic industries.

In terms of features, ETN pumps are perfect for pumping aggressive and hazardous liquids (slightly contaminated, clean, low viscosity). Unlike the UTN series, whose reliability it matches, the ETN series differs in its suitability for discontinuous pumping.

Designed for less heavy-duty applications, the ETS range provides excellent value for money, and is suitable for use in environments where intrinsic safety and zero emissions are a priority. In terms of technical specifications, both series can reach flow rates of 60m³/h and over 35m³/h of head.

These ATEX centrifugal pumps are the most well-known and appreciated products among our customers. However, our range is extensive and covers a wide range of different applications for various industrial sectors. Contact us through our website, and together we will find the best solution for handling corrosive fluids in your company.
