ATEX Centrifugal Pumps: Quality and Safety in Industrial Sectors

The ATEX centrifugal pumps I am one of the prides of production CDR. Our company places a high priority on the safety of work environments, with the protection of workers being paramount. Generally speaking, our entire product line is perfectly suited for applications in the industrial, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors. Of course, depending on technical requirements, specifications, or work methods, some pumps are preferred over others. In this article, we’d like to discuss the products that are by far the most popular among our customers.

ATEX centrifugal pumps: let's recall what we're talking about

When we talk about ATEX, we are talking about potentially explosive atmospheres (ATmosphere EXplosive is the acronym, in fact). We are talking about Centrifugal pumps ATEX when these are designed according to specific specifications that reflect two directives on occupational health and safety, enacted by the European Union. Specifically, it is the directive ATEX 2014/34/EU (also ATEX 114) and the ATEX Directive 1999/92/EC (also ATEX 153).

For Potentially explosive atmospheres, we recall, refers to a combination of extremely flammable substances (both in gaseous and powder form) and oxidizing agents, such as air. In specific concentrations and in the presence of an external ignition source (such as a spark or a hot surface), these mixtures can cause fires and explosions (for further details, please refer to this article)

ATEX certification means that the pump manufacturer (in this case, us at CDR, but there are many and varied ATEX-certified products) has done everything necessary and taken all appropriate measures to ensure the highest possible safety in these types of environments.

Magnetic drive pumps: customer favorites

In ATEX-classified environments, we have observed a growing number of requests for magnetic drive pumps in recent years. This trend is due to the fact that, compared to traditional pumps with mechanical seals, magnetic drive pumps offer significant advantages. Not only are they more efficient in terms of performance and output, but they also present a considerably higher level of safety. In fact, thanks to their innovative design, these pumps completely prevent the leakage of any type of liquid, thus reducing the risk of accidents and improving the protection of the work environment.

Thanks to the innovative technology of magnetic drag, rotary motion is transferred without any mechanical contact, using solely the attractive force generated by magnetic fields. Since no mechanical joints or seals are involved, perfect liquid containment is achieved, minimizing the risk of spills. This system not only ensures operator safety but is also highly respectful of the surrounding environment.

2024 has been an important year, concluding with great results and satisfaction. 2025, on the other hand, presents itself with many new developments, challenges, but also enormous opportunities for us and our clients. With these great achievements behind us, and with all our future goals firmly in sight, we would like to briefly discuss the ATEX centrifugal pumps that have been the most in demand for each of our main production sectors.

Sector chemical

As for the chemical sector, which is particularly sensitive due to the risk of contamination, we find the pump UTS steel version and UTN / DTN ISO lined (PP, ETFE or PFA). Both of these series, UTS and UTN, are designed with a closed impeller to handle clean fluids without solids.

These process pumps are particularly suitable for 24/7 operation. Furthermore, given the very high demand from a large number of clients, they are available in various sizes to cover the specific needs of each sector and customer. Technically, they can reach over 300 m³/h and 100m of head.

Sector pharmaceutical

In addition to the two we just mentioned, which are perfect for any environment, we will mention the series XTS e XTN. These are ATEX-certified centrifugal pumps specifically designed for the pharmaceutical sector. These pumps were first introduced in 2018 at the request of a company we work with, which needed to handle fluids containing solids, powders, and residues. Our magnetic drive pumps were therefore ideal for this task.

The advanced hydraulic technology of this pump series took years of work and development to perfect, but the results have been truly significant. Today, the XTS and XTN series are the pride of our Technical and R&D Department and have been recognized and appreciated by our customers around the world.

The X series, in particular, is a magnetically driven pump with an open impeller, fluxed shaft, and diamond bushings capable of pumping liquids containing solids, ensuring excellent performance and unprecedented safety.

Sector industrial

The pump series ETN ed ETS They are the most widely used in the industrial sector. It is worth noting, however, that this sector covers many different fields, ranging from water treatment to the paper industry and the electroplating industry.

Speaking of features, ETN pumps are perfect for pumping aggressive and dangerous liquids (slightly contaminated, clean, low viscosity). Unlike the UTN series, with which it shares reliability, the ETN series differs in its suitability for intermittent pumping.

Designed for less demanding uses, the ETS range offers an excellent quality-price ratio and is suitable for environments where intrinsic safety and zero emissions are a priority. As for technical specifications, both series can achieve flow rates of 60m³and over 35m³of prevalence.

These ATEX centrifugal pumps are the most well-known and appreciated products by our customers.
