When and why to request pumps that comply with EU directives for safety in potentially explosive work environments.

 

In certain work environments, the airborne propagation of flammable substances or solvents can, under specific conditions, form an explosive mixture that, if ignited, can lead to a deflagration and fire. For this type of dangerous situation to occur, we must have what is known as the ‘explosive triangle’: fuel (dust or gas) + oxidant (very often oxygen) + ignition source (a source of energy capable of triggering an explosion).

In specific work environments, airborne propagation of flammable chemicals or solvents can create an explosive mixture under certain conditions. This mixture, if exposed to an ignition source, can cause a deflagration and fire. For such a dangerous situation to occur, all three elements of the so-called ‘explosive triangle’ must be present:

  1. Fuel This can be a powder, gas, or other flammable material that, when dispersed in the air, is capable of sustaining an explosive reaction.
  2. Fuel agent Often it's oxygen, which is needed to fuel combustion and support the explosion. Without a sufficient amount of oxygen or another oxidizer, the fuel cannot burn.
  3. Ignition source This is an energy source, such as a spark, a flame, or another mechanism that can initiate the explosive reaction. This ignition source is crucial for starting the combustion of the fuel and causing the explosion.

The combination of these three factors creates a potentially explosive environment. It is therefore essential to adopt preventive measures to minimize associated risks, such as controlling the dispersion of flammable materials, proper oxygen management, and protection against unsafe ignition sources. Only through careful management and strict compliance with safety regulations can the risk of serious accidents be reduced and a safe working environment be ensured.
